Police say Sonarpur violence was a spontaneous
reaction against years of oppression
Police arrested seven people in connection with the orgy of violence in which ten people, including two women, were lynched at Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas district in West Bengal on Thursday.
Inspector General of Police (law and order) Prasun Mukherjee today said six of the victims had already been identified, and four of them had criminal records.
Mukherjee said most of the arrested were locals who retaliated against the reign of terror unleashed by the criminals in the area.
A mob of locals chased and dragged out the victims from several houses at Bagerkhol area under Sonarpur police station and beat them to death.
Inspector General of Police (south Bengal) K J Singh and senior police officials are camping in the area.
Additional Superintendent of Police S M Gupta said the incident was a spontaneous reaction of the people who could no longer bear with the depredation of the anti-socials.
''The people were forced to take the law into their own hands because of police inaction,'' a zilla parishad functionary said.
