Onkar Singh in Meerut

Smita Bhaduri The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of the killing of 20 year old Smita Bhaduri by three Uttar Pradesh policemen in Meerut on January 14, and has asked the state government to submit a report on the tragic incident.

Speaking to rediff.com, the commission's director general (investigations), D R Karthikeyan said the commission was already seized of the matter and has directed the state government to submit a report.

"We are not even waiting for her parents to write to us because this is a clear case where the NHRC needs to take prompt and strict action. We have also directed the UP government to submit a report about the case of self-immolation in which a young man burnt himself to death. Both the cases are tragic and action needs to be taken in each case," asserted Karthikeyan.

Manjit Singh immolated himself in Lucknow outside the state assembly after the authorities refused to respond to his complaints that some local policemen were harassing his family and time and again locking up his brothers under the Goondas Act.

Meanwhile, Smita Bhaduri's father is planning to meet the NHRC chairman, Justice A N Verma. "I want to draw the commission's attention to the brutal way in which the police kill people and later claim that it was a case of mistaken identity. They have killed my daughter for no fault of hers," S K Bhaduri told rediff.com when this correspondent visited his residence in Modipuram on January 17.
