Rescue operations continued at River Godavari, in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, after a boat capsized in the swollen waters of the Taliperu rivulet on Tuesday evening.

Seventeen persons swam to safety or were rescued and 14 are reported missing.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali said the countryboat was washed away in flash floods, following incessant rains.

The boat was going from Cherla to Bhadrachalam town, when the accident occurred around 1600 hours (IST).

Relief Commissioner P Bhaskar Prasad said, ''The rescue teams are making all-out efforts. Search-points have been set up near the site at Cherla, at Bhadrachalam and Dummugudem.''

The district collector, superintendent of police and other district officials are supervising the rescue operations.

Police and revenue officials refused to comment on the number of casualties.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed ''deep anguish'' over the boat tragedy.
