Rain cripples railways in Bombay

Train services will be suspended till 2000 hours, following incessant rains, which disrupted normal life in the city.

According to a railway spokesperson, "Central and Western Railway services had to be suspended due to waterlogging along the tracks."

"Outstation trains could not reach Bombay as almost all the stations are flooded," he added.

The weather bureau said there was a well-marked low pressure area over north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal parts of Orissa and West Bengal. Coastal parts of Maharashtra will receive very heavy rainfall under the influence of this low pressure area.

"This is likely to continue for two days in coastal parts of Maharashtra, including Bombay and Thane, with gusts and strong winds."

In coastal Maharashtra and the entire Konkan belt, heavy rain was reported by the bureau, which warned fishermen not to venture out. Incessant rain has been forecast for the next 24 hours.

Four international and eight domestic flights from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport were diverted due to bad weather and poor visibility early today, airport sources said, adding that there was no aircraft movement from 1010 hours.

A Singapore Airlines freighter aircraft was diverted to Delhi, and a FedEx flight to Bangkok, while a Pakistan International Airlines flight returned to Karachi. An Air-India flight from Trivandrum was diverted to Madras, sources said.

A Jet Airways spokesman said six flights were diverted, while an Indian Airlines official said two flights were diverted.
