We need to reduce the population explosion of Mumbai where the poor are only becoming poorer, want free water, electricity, a place to live in, medical aid, schools and jobs in the name of quotas. Bombay cannot sustain such runaway population of the poor. It is the corrupt politicians in the Congress, Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar's party who are responsible for the poor man's plight in the city. They have treated the poor as vote giving machines who are mindless as the poor have responded favourably to the demands of the goonda politicians. No improvement is possible in the power sector, road sector, communications sector, water sector, education or the medical sector because the tax paying citizenship is shrinking as compared to the overall demand for the above services. I can bet that Cronje would not have confessed if the tape did not exist. The bottom line is that he took the money and he has to pay for it. So Pritish Nandy, do not make him out to be some tragic hero, he is no hero. There is a very easy way to catch the rest of the players. All that needs to be done is to give them two weeks to confess and if they don't, give immunity from prosecution to the bookies in exchange for their cooperation! How can he condone the fact that Hansie took bribes and tried to corrupt his teammates too? I can't help but laugh at his pathetic effort to put a sugar coating on this whole episode. If Indians are not singing, that is our problem. We should weed out the bad apples and be harsh with them for not disclosing facts despite repeated pleas to do so. Raghavendra Sondur

At least one can say that here is a human being who is a true gentleman and confessed to his crime. Will the Indian cricketer ever follow this example? We all now know for sure that there are more than a few cricketers in the Indian team who are corrupt! It is because of these few that we are looking at the whole lot with suspicion. The real culprits are the BCCI officials and some Indian players who are hiding facts. The South Africans had the decency to conduct a public enquiry while Indians are continuing to operate privately through the CBI and other agencies. Sat, 08 Jul 2000, 10:35:18EST -0600 Cronje has admitted to his crime only because he is in deep trouble. The fact that all his calls were tapped means that every conversation of his with the bookies is known to the cops. There is absolutely no way he can get out of this and therefore he pleaded guilty. Nandy need not overdo this compassion thing. These guys are thorough criminals and they deserve to be severely punished. The Indians have not yet come clean because there is not enough evidence to incriminate them. Once something comes up all these guys will be crying for help. I would like to see these people hanged to death in front of the public (maybe at Eden Gardens) for they have cheated us, our faith and our love for the game.

I am ashamed of the Indian cricketers who talk of being victimised because they belong to a minority community and who weep in public so as to get sympathy. I am with Cronje in this difficult hour.
