VHP to decide temple construction date on Friday

E-Mail this report to a friend

The governing council of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad will hold a meeting in Agra on Friday to arrive at a 'final decision' about the date for commencing construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Highly-placed VHP sources said that any decision taken at the meeting will have to be ratified by the dharma sansad, slated to meet in January next year, if the temple construction programme was to be set in motion.

Officially, the VHP has already taken a decision to start the construction of the temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. In Friday's meeting, its governing council will decide on an exact date to begin the construction, the sources added.

At present, a make-shift ram temple exists at the site where the disputed Babri Masjid once was. The disputed structure was demolished on December six, 1992. The VHP had also decided to take out a rath yatra in which a model of the proposed shrine will be carried to Ayodhya after the monsoon season is over.

The VHP's decision assumes significance in view of the fact that assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are due early next year.
