Family icon, wedding sari to be presented to Indian Museum

A priceless icon of Lord Vishnu, which used to be a household deity for generations of a family in Dhaka, will now grace the Indian Museum in Calcutta, according to museum director S Chakraborty.

The 'ashtadhatu' icon, carved in the Dravidian style of the 18th century, will formally become the property of the museum after a gift ceremony in Calcutta on Tuesday. Late Ambica Charan Ukil of Telirbag of Dhaka had bequeathed the deity to his daughter late Usharani Chakraborty.

Ukil's grandchildren are presenting this icon to the museum for preservation. Besides the icon, a century old Benarasi sari with floral designs in zari will also be on display at the museum. The sari belonged to late Alorani Lahiri of Tahirpur Raj house, Rajshahi. It was her wedding sari and was being presented to the museum to immortalise the zari art.

Both the objects will be handed over to the museum after a gift ceremony in which West Bengal Governor Viren J Shah will receive them from the donors.
