Post-ceasefire offer, Pakistan shells Indian village

Pakistan, on Wednesday, resorted to unprovoked shelling on Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time after the Hizbul Mujahideen announced a three-month unilateral ceasefire, injuring one person.

An official spokesman said Pakistani troops fired artillery and mortar shells in Uri sector targeting civilian areas and security force installations around 1030 hours (IST). One person was injured during the one-hour-long shelling. Some shells landed at Hathlango village near the Line of Control.

Official sources said Indian troops retaliated and targeted Pakistani army installations.

Security forces all along the Line of Control and the International Border have been put on high alert to foil any Pak attempt to send foreign militants into Kashmir following the unilateral ceasefire offer by the Hizbul Mujahideen.

The sources said signals were sent to all field commanders to keep strict vigil and intensify foot-and-night patrolling all along the LoC to foil any infiltration attempt.

''We anticipate that Pakistan will try to send hardcore and heavily armed foreign militants into Jammu and Kashmir to scuttle the peace process in the near future,'' the spokesman said, adding: ''we are alert to meet any such challenge."

In another development, Pakistan, on Wednesday, clarified that it did not influence the Hizbul Mujahideen's decision to announce an unilateral ceasefire in J&K. A foreign ministry official said that Islamabad recognized the All Party Hurriyat Conference as the 'sole representative of the Kashmiri people'.
