Court summons Samajwadi Party's Abu Asim Azmi

The chief of Samajwadi Party's Bombay unit, Abu Asim Azmi, was summoned this morning by the court in connection with the case against him filed by the Maharashtra government recently.

According to his counsel Majeed Memon, Azmi had not been arrested.

The Maharashtra government had recently sanctioned the prosecution of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray and Azmi. While the Sena chief was accused of inflammatory writing in his party mouthpiece Saamna in January 1993, the case against Azmi was that he had made an inflammatory speech in Bombay recently, in which he is reported to have referred to the possible break-up of the country.

The metropolitan magistrate's court in Mazgaon, in south-central Bombay, where the case was heard against him this morning, has scheduled the next hearing for August 10.
