West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu has been shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences from the Ram Monohar Lohia hospital, where he was admitted earlier in the day after he complained of uneasiness.

Basu was attending a meeting of the Communist Party of India's (Marxist) central committee at the party headquarters in New Delhi when he told his colleagues that he was "fainting."

Doctors from the RML Hospital were summoned immediately and Basu rushed to the hospital. Though initially the RML Hospital doctors said he was stable and would be kept under observation for some time, they later decided to move him to the AIIMS.

Speaking to rediff.com, senior party leader Somnath Chatterjee said: "Mr Basu complained of a slight breathing problem, but we did not want to take risk so we rushed him to the hospital. He is okay now. By evening, we hope, he will be well enough to join us again."

Party sources said yesterday the politburo meeting went on for a long time and Basu later gave a series of interviews and was naturally exhausted.

On Thursday the politburo met to discuss the issue of the Indian Union Muslim League joining the Left Democratic Front in Kerala. It was also to finalise the agenda for the special conference of the party from October 20 to 24 in Thiruvananthapuram.
