No scope for third-party mediation in Kashmir: India

India Wednesday said there was no scope for third-party mediation in Kashmir.

Denying reports that an American Kashmiri was mediating between India, Pakistan and the Hurriyat leaders, a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs said: "It is speculative and baseless."

He said the Indian position on Kashmir remained the same. India had always rejected third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, he said, adding that it would be resolved bilaterally with Pakistan under the Simla Agreement.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Congress today demanded a clarification from the government on the reported US secret diplomacy in Kashmir.

Congress spokesperson Ajit Jogi said India's policy on Kashmir had been against any third-party intervention.

A report in Jane's Intelligence Journal, sister publication of Jane's Defence Weekly has said an American Kashmiri is shuttling between Delhi, Islamabad and Washington on a secret diplomacy mission.

Jogi said if this were true, it would have serious implications.
