Bombay suburb tense over demolition

Charkop, in Kandivli in Bombay north, turned tense after deputy municipal commissioner G R Khairnar and his squad went to demolish an illegal mosque there on Wednesday morning.

As soon as Khairnar reached the spot, trouble erupted and people started throwing stones at the demolition squad. The irate crowd then turned its attention to vehicles on the road.

The police have cordoned off the area as a precautionary measure, since the area had witnessed major riots in December 1992-January 93.

The mosque is adjacent to a Hindu crematorium.

Following the outbreak of tension the demolition has been postponed.
