The 15,000-tonne Italian merchant vessel MV Med Star has entered Indian territory and is believed to be 70 km from Okha, north of Kandla.

When reports last came in, an Indian Coast Guard ship had cornered the merchant vessel and the stowaways were asked to surrender.

The stowaways had earlier sought asylum in any European country.

According to a representative of the insurance agent, PNI club, J B Boda, he has received a message from his company of details of negotiations.

While talking to German-based negotiators, the stowaways said that they did not possess bombs or ammunition. "We simply want safe asylum," they stated.

The Italian vessel was coming from Iran to Kandla to pick up granite.
