UP to expose corrupt officers

In a major campaign against corruption in high places, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to make public the names of senior officers found guilty of corruption.

The names, numbering about 50, would be made public after legal hurdles are cleared, Chief Minister Ram Prakash Gupta said.

Gupta made it clear that the names of only senior officers, which included some Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service officers, would be disclosed. "The government does not want to indulge in populism by giving out the names of junior employees," he said.

The government, he said, was committed to stamping out corruption and denied that he was being pressurised to withhold the names.

Gupta had asked the state vigilance department to speed up the prosecution process against 300-odd government officials. Of these, about 50 are senior officers.

He rejected the proposal for setting up a separate cell for corruption cases.
