Cops arrested for death of witness in priest's murder

E-Mail this report to a friend The suspended police station officer and constable accused in the death in custody of a witness to the murder of a Christian priest near Mathura were arrested and sent to jail after being produced before a magistrate today.

Murder charges have been brought against Station Officer Sunil Kumar Sharma and Constable Dinesh Upadhyaya, a police spokesman said.

The dead man, Vijay Ekka, worked as the cook of George Kunzhikandam, deputy in-charge of the Saint Francis School, Nabada.

Kunzhikandam was killed on June 6 while sleeping outside his school.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Agra zone, R R Bhatnagar has ordered a Crime Branch, Crime Investigation Bureau inquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Chandrika Rai has been transferred and appointed superintendent of police, railways, in Moradabad.

The postmortem on the cook's body indicated that he was strangulated. The suspended station officer, in a written statement to the police, tried to project that Ekka had committed suicide.
