In a major development, excise personnel recovered huge quantities of explosive material from a matchbox-laden truck at Nayudupeta in Nellore district on Tuesday.

Nearly 25,000 detonators, about three lakh metres of fuse wire packed in gunny bags, 100 kgs of gelatin sticks and country-made bombs placed beneath matchboxes in a truck were seized, police sources said.

The truck was proceeding towards the Orissa border from Gudiyappan in Tamil Nadu, sources said adding that two persons, including the driver of the truck, have been taken into custody and further investigations are on.

The driver told police that he was instructed to deliver the explosives in Narasannapeta in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, on the border of Orissa, sources said.

Meanwhile, the police on Tuesday arrested about 30 persons involved in large-scale arson and looting after a bomb explosion in a place of worship in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday night.

Guntur Superintendent of Police J Purnachandra Rao, said in a statement, the arrested persons had terrorised people, indulged in vandalism and looted property. They were remanded to 14 days' police custody by the sixth additional munsif magistrate.

The city, which was rocked by riots on Sunday night, was limping back to normalcy. No untoward incident was reported during the four-hour curfew relaxation period in three police station areas. Curfew was relaxed between 2 and 4 p.m. on Monday. Curfew would continue till Tuesday morning, the SP said.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code continued for the second day.
