Report sought from UP on anti-Christian violence

The National Commission for Minorities has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a report on the recent attacks on Christians in the state.

However, it has also expressed its dismay at small incidents being blown out of proportion to give an impression "as if the entire country is against Christians."

In a meeting with the National Council of Churches in India yesterday, NCM chairman Mohammed Shamim said: "The root cause of the problem is ignorance about other religions in the country."

The meeting, a part of an ongoing exercise, was attended among others by by NCCI president Vinod Peter and members of NCM.

NCCI, an umbrella organisation of 43 Protestant churches in the country, appreciated the efforts and actions of the NCM to bring about communal harmony and peace in the country.

The Council denied that July 2 would be observed as 'Black Day' and said we would observe it as a 'National Day of Prayer.'
