Azhar's fans attack cops in Howrah

At least two sub-inspectors and five police constables were injured when they were attacked by a mob in the Bankara area of Howrah district in West Bengal on Thursday night.

The mob was protesting against a letter published in Pratidin, a local eveninger, about the alleged involvement of former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin in match-fixing.

Bankara is a predominantly Muslim locality.

Soon after the letter was published, nearly 300 people descended on the streets and burnt copies of the newspaper.

District Magistrate, Howrah, Sunil Gupta told rediff.com: "Section 144 has been clamped in Bankara. The situation is tense, but under control."

Over 45 people have been arrested so far.

Tutu Bose, the editor of Pratidin, has issued an apology.
