14 pilgrims killed as truck overturns in Maharashtra

At least 14 pilgrims were killed, while 58 others were injured, many of them seriously, when a truck in which they were travelling, rolled down a valley at Parol in Vasai taluka of Thane district shortly after midnight.

The Thane rural police control room said that 14 persons who were killed in the accident included women and children.

The injured have been admitted to the local hospitals at Vasai, Mandvi and Virar. Reports reaching Vasai said some of the victims who are seriously injured are likely to be shifted to local hospitals in Bombay.

The occupants of the truck were crushed and some of them died on the spot.

Upon coming to know about the accident, the district collector Mukesh Khullar, DSP rural Parambir Singh, and the guardian minister Madhukar Pichad visited the accident site and also the hospital where the injured have been admitted.

District collector (Thane) Mukesh Khullar, deputy superintendent of police (thane rural range) Parambir Singh, guardian minister Madhukar Pichad have already reached the spot to get a first hand account of the accident. They visited the site as well as the hospitals.

The deceased have been identified as R J Dalvi (25), M V Garud (28), B S Kutade (10), Mangal Bagadi (19), D B Gaikwad (25), G A Kagade (20), A A Mishra (25) and M U Hakim (26). Six dead bodies are yet to be identified. Some of the injured are still said to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, a huge crowd from the neighbouring places have reached the spot. Police security has been tightened in that area, according to sources. Though it is alleged that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, the exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. Further details are still awaited.
