Heavy rains disrupt train services in Bombay

'Unseasonal' overnight rains continued to play havoc with the residents of Bombay, as Central Railway main line and Harbour line as well as Western Railway local trains came to a abrupt halt with waters rising over the tracks at many places, with Sion being the worst affected.

Western Railway also witnessed water-logging between Dadar and Mahim, with the local trains moving at snail's place. At many places water had come on to the tracks, forcing the trains to come to a standstill at some places. The trains were running more than an hour behind schedule.

The recent demolitions of hutments near the tracks on the harbour line added to the woes of CR commuters, as the debris left behind was washed onto the tracks, making the job of the railway employees engaged in clearing the tracks that much more harder.

The worst affected areas on Central Railway were Ghatkopar, Kanjur Marg, Matunga, Sion and Vikhroli where the water had risen to the platforms.

However, no untoward incidents took place in the metropolis, according to fire brigade sources. They said there were a few cases of trees falling but no major loss of life or property has been reported. However, yesterday two persons died due to a short circuit in Kurla, the police informed.

One ray of light amidst rain and gloom comes from the fact that today is a bank holiday, and schools and colleges are shut for summer vacation, as are a sizeable section of commercial establishments and offices.
