Relatives of air crash victims leave for Taipei

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Relatives of the Indian passengers who were on the ill-fated Singapore Airlines aircraft, which crashed in Taipei airport, left for Madras on their way to Taipei on Wednesday evening.

G Sadanand, special officer, protocol, who is heading the special cell at the Hyderabad airport, told rediff.com that eight relatives of the passengers had been sent by a regular Indian Airlines flight (IC-948) to Madras at 1700 hours (IST) on Wednesday.

From there, they will be flown to Taipei, where Singapore Airlines' Flight SQ006 had crashed on Tuesday night, by a special aircraft.

Sadanand informed, "We don't have any information on the fate of the ill-fated passengers except that one of them is safe."

Earlier, Srinivas, assistant station manager of Singapore Airlines, had told newspersons in Hyderabad, "We are making arrangements to fly four blood relatives of each passenger to Taipei, provided they possess valid passports. So far, eight relatives have been ticketed."

The Madras-based official was in Hyderabad to supervise the arrangements. "Singapore Airlines will provide passage, food, accommodation to the relatives of the passengers," he added.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a high-level meeting with senior police and airline officials to review the arrangements being made for providing assistance to relatives of the passengers travelling on the ill-fated Singapore Airlines flight.

The state government has opened a special cell at the Hyderabad airport to provide information and help to the relatives of the passengers.
