Private buses keep off Calcutta roads

Public transportation in West Bengal was severely disrupted on Thursday as private buses and mini buses went off the roads in response to a three-day strike call demanding hike in fares following the increase in prices of petroleum products.

Office-goers and other commuters in Calcutta had a tough time in getting to their destinations as about 4,500 bus and mini buses, owned by private operators remained in garage. The number of government buses that plied during the day was too short of the requirement.

While the government buses were heavily overcrowded, taxi operators had a bonanza during the day.

Private bus and mini bus operators maintained that they would continue the strike for full three days while the state government said it was awaiting the centre's decision on the proposed revision of petro product prices before going for any fare hike.
