Dismissed judge remanded to
judicial custody till Nov 30

Dismissed judge J W Singh, facing charge of extortion in nexus with the underworld, was on Thursday produced before a special court which extended his judicial custody till November 30.

Singh's lawyer I P Bagadia informed the trial court that his client may move the Supreme Court against the high court order or else urge the trial court to reconsider its orders.

The Bombay high court had on Wednesday refused to enlarge him on bail and rejected his plea to quash proceedings launched against him under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act and Prevention of Corruption Act.

Designated judge A P Bhangale asked the registrar to prepare by month end the transcript of three cassettes which recorded the telephonic conversations on the basis of which Singh has been booked under the MCOCA and PCA.

Police have recorded telephonic talks between Singh, underworld figure Chhota Shakeel and deceased lawyer Liyakat Ali Shaikh in March-April last year which reveal that he had 'hired' goons to recover his chit fund money amounting to Rs four million from Sardar Singh Abrol in lieu of judicial favours.

Transcripts of two cassettes have already been made while that of the third one is underway. On Singh's plea, the court had ordered the registrar to prepare the transcript in the presence of the accused and the investigating officer.

Singh had questioned the transcript made by the police and urged the court to make a fresh one under its supervision.

Singh's egg-shaped cell in the central prison in Bombay has been provided with heavy security and is segregated from other barracks housing the jails.
