MiG-27 crashes in West Bengal

A MiG-27 fighter crashed in a tea garden in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Wednesday evening, but the pilot managed to bail out safely, according to a senior police official.

The aircraft, which had taken off from the Hashimara airbase and piloted by Squadron Leader S Badli, crashed at the Hantapur tea garden, 32 kilometres from Jalpaiguri at 1850 hours (IST) on Wednesday, Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police Ranveer Kumar said on Thursday.

The aircraft crashed far from human habitation, Kumar said.

Sq Ld Badli is back at the airbase, he said.

The police have cordoned off the area where the wreckage lay.
