US businessman's bail plea rejected

Justice P K Sen of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of an American citizen, arrested for not complying with a trade agreement entered into with an Indian company.

Marcus Lord Villigran, 31, arrested in Jallandar, Punjab, was brought to Calcutta and remanded to judicial custody 35 days ago.

State government Public Prosecutor Kaz Safiulla submitted before the bench that Villigran, on behalf of M/s Lords Leather Limited, California, had placed an order for leather goods valued at $50,000 with a Calcutta-based company S P A Shoes Private Limited.

The consignment was shipped to M/s Lords Leather Limited, Safiulla said, but no payment was made though the Indian company repeatedly contacted them through the Indian Consulate in New York.

Villigran was booked when he landed in Jallandar on another business trip.
