15 feared drowned in north Bengal

At least fifteen people were feared drowned when a mechanised boat capsized midstream in the Mahananda river near Itahar in North Dinajpore district on Thursday evening.

Preliminary official reports reaching Calcutta said five bodies had so far been fished out from the river while search for the remaining bodies was on.

The overloaded boat was heading towards Goalpara in north Bengal when the mishap occurred.

Senior police officials had rushed to the spot and launched massive search and rescue operation with the help of the local people even as many passengers of the ill-fated boat swam ashore.
