Three killed in political violence in Midnapore

Three persons, including two Trinamul Congress supporters and a Communist Party of India-Marxist activist, were killed at Chherua village in the trouble-torn Midnapore district Monday, police sources said in Calcutta.

The sources said that senior police officers rushed to the village in the Kotwali police station area with additional reinforcements.

They said that tension was running high after the political clash. No arrest has been made so far.

The Trinamul Congress, meanwhile, condemned the killing of their supporters and said that the party MLAs and leaders would go to the Writers' Buildings with the bodies on Monday.

The Trinamul Congress policy-making body chairman, Pankaj Banerjee, told newsmen that partymen would go to the secretariat and ask Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee how the incident took place despite his repeated assurance that violence would not recur in the area.

He alleged that the Trinamul Congress supporters, who recently returned to their homes in Midnapore, were again evicted by CPI-M cadres despite assurance by the chief minister as well as by the CPI-M state secretary, Anil Biswas.
