Karnataka CM upset with governor

Serious differences have surfaced between Karnataka Governor Dr V S Rama Devi and Chief Minister S M Krishna over the handling of the Dr Rajakumar kidnap issue. Sources said the governor was in favour of a more proactive line on the issue than was displayed by the state government.

Recently, the governor issued orders appointing vice chancellors of universities without referring the matter to the chief minister. While the matter was well within the purview of the governor, decorum demanded that the CM was kept in the loop.

In what is seen as a retaliatory move, the chief minister plans to introduce a motion in the state assembly shortly to take away the powers vested in the governor to appoint vice chancellors.

An upset Krishna is believed to have decided to hand over a protest letter against Governor Rama Devi to Union Home Minister Lal Kishen Advani on Monday. Late Sunday evening, the Karnataka Bhavan staff in the capital were seen taking dictation from an official close to the chief minister.

Naturally, Congress leaders who are watching the goings-on with trepidation suspect the Centre to be encouraging the feud, and party MPs are said to have brought the matter to the attention of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi.

MPs R L Jalappa and Puttaswamy Gowda are in fact expected to raise the issue during zero hour in the Lok Sabha this week.
