40 Trinamul MLAs, corporators arrested

Rifat Jawaid in Calcutta

About 40 Trinamul Congress MLAs and corporators were arrested and sent to Calcutta's Presidency Jail on Monday afternoon soon after they began their protest march to the Writers' Building.

They were protesting against the killing of three Trinamul workers in Midnapore on Sunday.

As soon the slogan-shouting mob began marching from Metro Cinema in Esplanade, police cordoned the road leading to the state secretariat and snatched away empty coffins being carried by the protestors.

In the ensuing clashes between the police and protestors several Trinamul workers were injured.

Mala Roy, a Trinamul corporator in the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, said the cops pushed her around. "Today's incident has proved that the entire administrative machinery in the state is playing puppet in the Marxist government's hands. It's a matter of great concern that in a democratic country, we were not allowed to lodge our protest," she said.

Police, however, said protestors were not beaten up. "We snatched away the coffins because we felt their presence was provoking the crowd," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Raj Kanojia.

While the Trinamul Congress said it would resume protests on Tuesday, Kanojia said his men were prepared to meet any eventuality.
