Vajpayee asks for report on Sakhi tragedy

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has asked for a detailed report on the recent killing of tigress Sakhi even as he was recuperating at the Breach Candy hospital after a knee replacement surgery.

After the operation on Tuesday, the prime minister read about the skinning of the thirteen-month-old tigress at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad and was moved by the tragedy.

He called up the Additional Inspector General (Wildlife) at New Delhi from the hospital and asked for a detailed report on the entire episode.

"He was moved by the report," Prime Minister's Office sources said in Bombay on Wednesday. "He cares for wildlife," the sources added.

The tigress was sedated and killed in the cage itself and was later skinned. The poachers dumped its body and fled the scene.
