5 killed in AP after crackers explode

Five persons, including an old woman and two children, were killed and five others injured when fire crackers stored in a house caught fire and exploded at G Medapadu village in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh late on Thursday night.

According to a state police spokesman, the mishap occurred at Pirala Stambham street. He said the entire building housing the premises where crackers were kept came crumbling down with a deafening sound.

East Godavari district Superintendent of Police A B Venkateswara Rao confirmed the death of five persons in the explosion. He said the cause of the accident was being probed.

The dead persons have been identified as Kotha Mangayamma (60), Akupalu Ramesh, Madakala Ramesh (both aged 16 years), Jetti Veera Venkata Satyanarayana (11) and Kotha Rajesh (10).

Four of the injured persons - Kotha Sesharatnam (35), Pathipati Rambabu (24), Adapakula Srinivas (22) and Sunkara Venkata Siva Kumar (11)- have been admitted to the Government General Hospital at Kakinada and another person Jyothula Krishna (36) was admitted to a hospital in Biccavole.
