Change attitude towards BJP, Bangaru tells Dalits

Bharatiya Janata Party president Bangaru Laxman on Saturday called upon Dalit and Ambedkarite organisations in the country to do a 'honest introspection' with respect to their attitude towards the BJP.

Addressing a press conference in Bombay, Laxman said that some of the Dalit and Ambedkarite organisations have either tried to follow their own separate paths or have chosen to be misguided into joining an alliance with the Congress, the very party against which Dr Ambedkar had bitterly fought.

"Over the last many years, they have tended to keep a distance from the BJP under the influence of the false propaganda of our adversaries," he stated.

By doing so, these organisations have not rendered any service to the community they claim to serve. The frequent splits and fissures in these organisations have greatly weakened the cause of uplift and empowerment of Dalits.

Inspite of the anti-BJP propaganda, BJP has been able to steadily expand its support base among schedule castes, tribes and other weaker sections of society.

"It is, therefore, time for such organisations to do a honest introspection in respect of their attitude to the BJP," Laxman said and added that the unity of BJP and Dalit organisations will help in simultaneous promotion of the principles of social justice and social harmony.

Laxman said that BJP in its election manifesto of 1998 had promised to develop Chaityabhoomi, the samadhi of Dr B R Ambedkar, into a national monument on par with Raj Ghat and Shanti Van in Delhi.

He urged the National Democratic Alliance government to implement the decision speedily and erect a grand monument at Dadar.
