Quake rattles Madhya Pradesh

An earthquake of severe intensity shook Jabalpur and its surrounding areas in Madhya Pradesh early on Tuesday morning.

The local police control room, quoting the Delhi-based seismological office, said it was 5.2 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre at 23.1 north 18.2 east towards Barela-Kumaria region, 10 km from Jabalpur.

The tremors, which lasted about 10 seconds, were recorded at 0403 hours IST.

No casualty or damage to property has been reported so far from anywhere.

While some senior district officers, along with a medical team, have left for Barela-Kumaria, the collector and superintendent of police are monitoring the situation from the control room.

The quake woke up people, who rushed out of their homes in panic.

Some people said they also experienced mild tremors at around 0100 hours IST.

Jabalpur had experienced an earthquake, which claimed eight lives and caused extensive damage to property, on May 22, 1997.
