PIL against Bombay civic union, Sharad Rao

A public interest litigation on Wednesday urged the Bombay high court to take action against the Municipal Mazdoor Union and its leader Sharad Rao for calling upon its members to resort to an illegal strike, which last week resulted in non supply of water to the citizens in Bombay.

The PIL, filed by lawyer Firoz Ansari, urged that the union and its leader be blacklisted forthwith and restrained by an order to represent the civic workers.

The PIL contended that both the union and its leader had committed contempt of court on two occasions earlier. They had now compounded the offence by declaring an illegal strike and holding the entire city to ransom.

The PIL prayed for awarding exemplary punitive damages on both the respondents, MMU and its president Sharad Rao. It also urged for payment of costs.

The PIL referred to earlier orders of the high court delivered on March 30 and April 19 this year that have been flouted by the union and its leader. Hence, they were liable for contempt action, it prayed.

The PIL will come up for hearing before the bench headed by Chief Justice B P Singh in due course. PTI
