Train services restored on Central Railway

Suburban train services on Central Railway, which had been disrupted following a head-on collision between a goods train and a lone shunting engine between Kurla and Chunabhatti stations, were restored by Thursday afternoon. However, almost all trains on the harbour section were running behind schedule.

Suburban train services, especially on the harbour section, were completely paralysed on Wednesday night and in the morning peak hours on Thursday after the collision resulted in derailment of some rolling stock.

The derailment affected traffic movement on the fast track of the Central Railway's main line. All the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-bound trains were diverted to the slow tracks.

Central Railway sources said that the accident took place at around 0040 hours (IST) on Wednesday night, following which the services were completely paralysed. Though restoration work was undertaken on a war footing, the services could not be restored till Thursday morning. No one was injured in the accident.

This resulted in bunching of trains and most the trains were delayed by more than 15 to 30 minutes, according to peak hour commuters. Millions of commuters were stranded at Kurla, Sion, Chunabhatti, Wadala and Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar stations after being caught unawares about the accident. Commuters had to get into jam-packed trains to reach their offices in downtown Bombay.

Many of the commuters preferred to travel on the Western Railway after crossing over from Dadar. This led to heavy rush on the Western Railway, too.

Buses originating from Kurla, Sion, Vikhroli Ghatkopar and Andheri stations were over-crowded.

Central Railway and security officials have already reached the site. The cause of the accident is not yet known. However, an investigation has been initiated, according to the sources.
