UP governor accepts Gupta's resignation

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Ram Prakash Gupta's resignation has been accepted by Governor Suraj Bhan and he has been asked him to continue in the office until an alternative arrangement is made.

A spokesman of the governor's office said: "The chief minister called on the governor this morning and offered to step down. His resignation has been accepted, but he has been asked to continue until a new leader is duly elected and installed in office."

Meanwhile, Union Surface Transport Minister Rajnath Singh, who has been picked by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to replace Gupta, arrived in Lucknow on Wednesday morning to a tumultous welcome.

A meeting of the BJP Legislature Party has been called in the afternoon to formally elect Singh as the leader of the House.

Party sources said Singh would be sworn in on October 28.
