26 members of UP family killed in mishap

Twenty-six members of a family, on their way to a pilgrimage, were feared drowned when a tractor trolley in which they were travelling fell into a canal, about 100 kilometres from Nainital, on Thursday night, police in Khatima (Uttar Pradesh) said on Friday.

In all, 37 members of the family from Mailani village in Lakhimpur Kheri were on their way to Nanakmata shrine in the neighbouring Udhamsingh Nagar district when the accident occurred, they said.

Four bodies have been recovered so far while 11 people have been rescued, police said. Search operations for the others continued, they added.

Among the 26 feared drowned were nine children, eight women and nine men.

A fisherman, who was sleeping near the canal rescued 11 persons, police said.

The accident occurred when the hook connecting the trolley to the tractor broke resulting in it falling into the Sharda canal, they said.
