AP govt gears up to curb spread of brain fever

Andhra Pradesh government has geared up to curb the spread of Japanese Encephalitis, commonly known as brain fever, which has affected people in nine districts of the state.

State Chief Secretary P V Rao held videoconferencing on Saturday with collectors of some of the worst hit districts including Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, Cuddapah, Anantapur, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Chittoor and Nalgonda and asked them to take all preventive measures.

So far this year, 74 cases of JE were reported in the nine districts as against 160 cases in October last, he said.

Rao directed the district authorities to identify the high-risk villages and take up measures to tackle the disease, including conducting anti-larval operations, focal spray with malathion and removal of pigs from human habitations.

He also ordered stocking of necessary medicines in hospitals, requisitioning the services of specialists and deployment vehicles at all primary health care centres to transport cases to the treatment centres, wherever required.

Earlier, Congress Legislature Party leader Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy urged the government to take measures on a war footing to eradicate Japanese Encephalitis.

Reddy alleged that though over 250 persons died and 1,200 persons were affected by brain fever in the state during October-December last year, the government did not take any corrective measures to improve the sanitary conditions or ensure clean environment in the slum and rural areas.
