Bomb hoax calls leave Calcutta airport in a tizzy

Security officials at Calcutta airport went into a tizzy after an anonymous caller rang up the control tower at about 1246 hours on Saturday, claiming that a bomb would explode any moment.

A thorough search for one-and-half hours proved futile.

Airport officials said the departure of flights was not affected. They said a similar call was received by the authorities at about the same time on Friday.

Police officials suspected that most calls were made by 'gangsters', but they had little option and had to go through a security drill under the rules as nothing could be left to chance.

On Thursday, a similar call was made to the airport. On Wednesday, a Delhi-bound Jet Airways flight was held up at for about an hour because of a hoax call.

Even though all telephones at the airport are connected to calling number identification machines, the police could not trace the caller as most such calls are made from public telephone booths, officials said.
