Qureshi moots semi-sovereign status for J&KFazal Haq Qureshi, principal negotiator of the Hizbul Mujahideen and leader of the People's Political Front, has suggested 'semi sovereign status' for Jammu and Kashmir and joint control by India and Pakistan. ''It is a most feasible solution to the problem bedevilling J&K. Andorra in Europe is an example that can be emulated for resolving the J&K issue,'' Qureshi told the web-site tehelka.com. Andorra is controlled by France and Spain and is an extraordinary arrangement for what is now a duty-free haven. Qureshi, who is involved in negotiations with the Centre, said, ''J&K is the issue of the sub-continent as a whole. If we want to come out of this intricate problem, we need to devise a formula. There is no time for emotions to rule our senses. Only wisdom must guide our perception to find a viable solution.'' Qureshi made the proposal at a two-track diplomatic conference in Neemrana in Rajasthan recently. He said, ''J&K is a landlocked country and its people have to live in peace with India and Pakistan.'' He also said social and economic life in J&K can be preserved by allowing people double citizenship. UNI |
