Tension in Rajsamand after attack on Ganesh procession

E-Mail this report to a friend

Twelve people, including three policemen, were injured during pelting of stones on a Ganesha procession in Rajsamand town in Rajasthan on Saturday, police said on Sunday.

Tension gripped the town after some people threw stones from their houses on the procession when it was passing through their locality, police said.

All shops and markets immediately downed shutters and people rushed home fearing an outbreak of violence.

This is the second such incident in the town within a month. Last month, a Shiva procession was attacked. This was followed by violence and clamping of curfew.

Inspector General Police B N Meena said that one company each of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary and Merwar Bheel Core have been deployed in the town where situation was tense but under control.

Meena said 50 people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Deputy IG Ashok Sampat was camping in the town to maintain law and order, he said.

Meanwhile, neighbouring towns of Kankroli, Rainagar, Aamet and Deogarh observed a bandh on Sunday in protest against Saturday's incident.
