Uttar Pradesh police on Monday claimed to have achieved a breakthrough in the series of bomb blasts in the state on the eve of Independence Day, with the arrest of two persons having links with the Hizbul Mujahideen and Student Islamic Movement of India.

Mobin and Maroof, former students of Aligarh Muslim University, have confessed involvement in the bomb blasts which left 13 people dead and several injured, Director General of Police M C Dwivedi told reporters in Lucknow.

They also confessed that three persons, who were killed in the Agra bomb explosion in a house, were members of the SIMI and they died while going to conduct blasts in Cantonment area stadium, Dwivedi claimed.

A special task force has been constituted for further investigations into these cases, the DGP said.

One of the blasts had occurred on board the Sabarmati Express near Faizabad.
