E-Mail this report to a friend

More than 30 people were feared killed and several others injured when a private bus rolled down into the Teesta river near Sevoke, about 20 km from Siliguri on Sunday morning, police said.

West Bengal minister for urban development Ashok Bhattacharjee, who is supervising rescue operations, said 15 bodies were recovered till noon.

Bhattacharjee said few bodies have been washed away by swirling waters and the casualty may cross 30.

The accident occurred when the Siliguri-bound packed bus from Binnaguri skidded off the road while negotiating a turn after crossing Sevoke bridge over Teesta, the police said.

Fire brigade personnel, police and local youths are trying to retrieve bodies from the submerged bus, the police said.

Meanwhile, 11 people were killed when an overcrowded boat capsized midstream in Tilyuga river in Madhubani district of Bihar on Saturday night.

State home commissioner U N Panjiyar said that bodies of three women were recovered. Thirty-five people were in the boat when it capsized. Twenty-four of them swam to safety.

The boat's occupants were returning to their village after selling commodities at the local market.

Divers had been pressed into service to fish out the remaining bodies.
