Charges framed against suspended judge

E-Mail this report to a friend

A special court set up under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act Friday framed charges against suspended additional sessions judge J W Singh for alleged involvement in an extortion case.

Additional sessions judge A P Bhangale framed charges under Sections 120b (conspiracy) and 327 (extortion by causing fear of death) of the Indian Penal Code and also under Section 3 of the MCOC Act and various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Singh's counsel argued that the court should not frame charges against Singh, because an application for bail, as well as a petition challenging the applicability of the MCOC Act is pending before the high court. However, the court rejected this plea.

Earlier, the special court had rejected Singh's bail application, but it was admitted in the high court and the matter is pending before a division bench consisting of Justices J D Patil and R M Lodha.

Singh had allegedly demanded money from a chit fund operater through members of organised gangs.

The Bombay police had also taped telephonic conversations between Singh and a Karachi-based don.
