26 held for bid to blacken Jichkar's face

E-Mail this report to a friend

Twenty-six activists of the Vidarbha Rajya Sangharsh Samiti were arrested when they tried to blacken the face of former Congress Rajya Sabha member Shrikant Jichkar during a meeting in Amravati on Tuesday.

Jichkar was addressing a seminar on cotton when the activists forced entry into the venue and shouted slogans condemning Jichkar as a traitor and in favour of statehood for Vidarbha. They insisted on Jichkar coming out of the hall for a discussion even as Vidarbha statutory development board chairman Harshwardhan Deshmukh tried to pacify the activists.

A shocked Jichkar had to stop his speech abruptly and confined himself to the hall before the city police apprehended the activists.

The seminar was attended by prominent leaders and ministers from Vidarbha.

Amravati district samiti convenor Dilip Yedetkar and former legislator Anil Gondane were among those arrested.
