CPI-M warns central government

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Communist Party of India-Marxist Friday ''warned'' the Union Government against taking any move intended to ''subvert'' Centre-state relations in West Bengal.

The CPI-M politburo, in a statement in New Delhi, said the continued ''barrage of baseless charges'' being made by Union Home Minister L K Advani against the West Bengal government seemed designed to misuse the powers of the central government.

Among various measures being contemplated by the Centre for improving law and order was the application of the Disturbed Areas Act without the consent of the state government.

''An ordinance seeking to amend the act is being considered by the government to suit the political interests of the Trinamul Congress. If such a step is taken it will not be tolerated by the people of the state,'' the politiburo said.

In Calcutta, West Bengal Chief Minister Basu dismissed Advani's observation on his comment regarding Trinamul Congress chief and Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying it mattered little whether Advani liked it or not.

''Do I have to make a statement to make Advani happy? I have spoken the truth. It matters little whether Advani liked it or not,'' Basu told mediapersons.

He once again described Banerjee as a ''violent sort of woman'' and said she had the propensity to incite people to violence.
