Six undertrials killed in shootout near Saharanpur

Sharat Pradhan

Six undertrials were killed in a shootout near Saharanpur, about 450 kilometres from Lucknow on Monday, an official spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, "The undertrials were on their way from Deoband sub-prison to Saharanpur for their court hearing when they were gunned down by unidentified assailants."

He said, "The police vehicle carrying the undertrials was intercepted at a lonely spot in Sakhan-Kalan village where the assailants had put up a road block. No sooner had the vehicle slowed down, the assailants opened indiscriminate fire, killing six of the undertrials and injuring a head constable grievously."

Five of the slain undertrials were facing trial in a case of double murder in which two brothers of a family in Mikhapur village were killed in February last.

"The fact that three of the six victims happened to be real brothers indicated that the killings were the outcome of an old family feud," a senior Saharanpur police official told rediff.com over telephone.

No arrest had, however, been made so far.
