Rajan charged with giving false information: PTI

The Thai immigration authorities on Wednesday charged gangster Chhota Rajan, wounded in an attack recently, with giving false information in a visa application and barred him from leaving the country, police said.

The authorities have found that Rajan, who had entered the country under the name Vijay Daman, filed a false statement while requesting a change in his tourist visa to a business visa, police said. The offence carries six months imprisonment or a fine.

The police also want Rajan, who had expressed a desire to fly out of Thailand on Thursday by his private plane, to testify against six persons arrested for the September 15 shootout, in which Indian jeweller Michael D'Souza was killed and his wife and Rajan were injured.

Rajan had requested a business visa in May, to obtain a licence to operate an import-export firm, Daman Export-Import, the police said. The immigration bureau later discovered that the company did not exist nor was there any record to register it, the police said.

Rajan is being treated at an undisclosed place for gunshot injuries he suffered in an attempt on his life by gunmen reportedly hired by a rival gang.

Media reports said Rajan will appear in a court on Thursday to testify as a witness in the September 15 attack.
