Trinamul not to accept friendly contests

The Trinamul Congress Tuesday said it would not agree to any "friendly fight" with Congress in 18 assembly seats, even as the two parties reached an agreement on 276 of 294 seats in West Bengal.

The Trinamul has sent a letter to All-India Congress Committee General Secretary Kamal Nath, who negotiated the seat-sharing agreement with party chief Mamata Banerjee, saying it was totally against any friendly contest, Trinamul chief whip Sudip Bandopadhyay told PTI.

The Trinamul chief had earlier rejected the proposal floated by the Congress.

On whether his party would concede any of the remaining 18 seats, Bandopadhyay avoided a straight reply, saying that the Congress wanted some seats. Further talks would be held between the two parties to settle the issue.

Meanwhile, dissent continued among those 18 Congress legislators likely to be axed.

WBPCC President Pranab Mukherjee, who held a meeting with some state Congress leaders on Monday night, in which some of those MLAs were present, had said that those seats might be divided between the two parties or some other formula or mechanism may be evolved, party sources said.
