CPI-M leader shot at

Unidentified gunmen shot at a CPI-M leader and Budge Budge Municipality Chairman Sailendra Nath Ghosh and his assistant from point blank-range in Calcutta's New Alipore area on Wednesday, police said.

According to the police, the attackers opened fire on Ghosh and his assistant Uttam Ghatak as they alighted from their car and were making their way to a nearby house, injuring them seriously.

Police rushed them to the state-run SSKM hospital where the condition of both was stated to be critical. A manhunt has been launched for the gunmen. No arrests have been made as yet.

Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee said senior police officials were investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, CPI-M state secretary Anil Biswas condemned the attack and alleged that it appeared to be the handiwork of 'hired goons'.
